Phonics and Reading in the Infant Department

The infant department have been considering how children learn to read and how they develop their phonic knowledge. After extensive research, including visits to a number of schools we have decided to change and adapt some of our practice.

We now teach phonics through a READ WRITE INC programme. Our children become familiar with phonemes and graphemes, rhymes and letter formation. Alongside this scheme we have invested heavily in many new books which support our children’s phonic progression, knowledge and understanding. We are constantly emphasising to parents and carers the importance of reading at home . In particular we strongly advocate reading a book several times as this improves decoding skills, fluency, expression and comprehension.

We are really grateful to our wonderful school association for raising the money to enable us to improve this area.
