Thursday 9th November – Music News
It’s been a week of action in the music department at Compton this week. We started off on Tuesday by recording our entry for this year’s BBC Radio Devon Star for Christmas competition. The children sang a beautiful arrangement of Silent Night, with Abigail Parker singing a solo for the first verse and Mrs Hart and Mrs Butcher accompanying us with a flute duet. The recording will now be submitted to the judges, who will then create a short list. All the shortlisted entries will be played on Radio Devon and listeners will be able to vote for their favourite. The two choirs with the most votes – one from the ‘small school’ category and another from the ‘large school’ category will perform at Buckfast Abbey on 14th December as part of Radio Devon’s carol concert. This concert will then be broadcast across Devon on Christmas Day. Keep an eye on the blog to hear how we do in this!
Miss Lambert had an exciting phone call from Morrison’s supermarket on Tuesday – they had been let down by a choir at the last minute and wanted a group to sing at their relaunch on Thursday. Someone had recommended Compton to them and we were more than happy to help. 40 members of the singing group gathered in the new entrance of the supermarket and after a local veteran had cut the ribbon, the children entertained the crowds with three songs – ‘Hot chocolate’, ‘One and a million’ and our old favourite ‘Power in Me’. As usual, the children sang their socks off and did the school proud. Everyone enjoyed the performance and the staff at Morrisons were very impressed, offering to support the school association in providing prizes for any upcoming raffles. As we walked back to school, some members of the public told us how much they had enjoyed our singing.
So that’s it for this week. Next week, on 16th November we will be performing in the City Centre as part of the Christmas Lights Switch on, at 4:30pm in the Plaza, under the big screen. We look forward to seeing you all there.
