Mrs Marks had the pleasure of taking some children to a strings gathering at the Guildhall on Monday 20th November. We invited children from our school who attend Strings club or have additional strings tuition for an opportunity to develop and showcase their skills. Other schools from Plymouth also attended and brought along their cohort of children that are learning strings as part of their in-school music lessons. This was good as it increased the numbers and it meant our 13 children could play as a part of a junior orchestra of 50 children with skills ranging from weekly participation in a club to grade 5.
Throughout the day, the children were split into smaller groups and learnt 3 new pieces of music and these sessions were led by different teachers. We were treated to a performance at the start of the day from the music instructors. It was a fantastic and inspiring performance and it certainly gave the children an insight into what they may to be capable of if they continue with their interest in music.
After learning the new music pieces, all the children got back together to form an orchestra and they were able to perform to parents and other school children. It was a great opportunity for the children as it provided them with a reason and outcome as to why they are having music lessons. The children were very excited and proud of themselves after the performance and they felt they had really achieved something as some of the pieces were quite tricky!
It was a great day for Mrs Marks as a spectator but more importantly, for the children who got to mix with lots of other interested children and learn new music pieces.
Also on Monday, we had the phone call from the BBC to tell us we had made it to the final shortlist in Radio Devon’s Star for Christmas competition. On Wednesday, we were visited by Laura James and Jake Prowse from the BBC to record us singing Silent Night and to interview Mr Oakshott and some of our children. We had great fun in the recording and eagerly awaited Friday morning when our performance was broadcast across Devon. The broadcast can be heard here at http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p05l4z02 ,1:53:30 in the show. We are now competing against Lipson Vale Primary and Stowford Primary in Ivybridge. Voting opens on Friday 1st December – more information will follow on this next week. The school with the most votes will perform in Buckfast Abbey on Thursday 14th December. Please feel free to share the news on social media platforms, using #starforchristmas. Many thanks to Mrs Butcher and Mrs Hart for their help in getting us shortlisted.
